Outcomes Based Education to be trialed at Makerere University

Makerere University students could be among the first graduates to earn a degree under an Outcomes Based Education (OBE) curriculum. School of Distance and Lifelong Learning (SoDLL) in partnership with Leeds Metropolitan University in the UK has developed an employability and entrepreneurship skills development program for school leavers as part of the Education Partnerships in Africa Project (EPA).


Gender disparity in ICT use

Makerere University researchers in a joint study have found that female students are less likely to use Information Communication Technologies compared to their male counterparts. School of Distance and Lifelong Learning’s Dr Alice Nankya Ndidde, said that the study undertaken under the Panafrican Research Agenda on the Pedagogical Integration of ICT in Africa showed that a gender disparity existed within the use and integration of ICT in schools and institutions of higher education.


New! New Programme! Bachelor of Science in Agriculture and Rural Innovation External (BARI-EXT) now running

Makerere University College of Education and External Studies (CEES) in collaboration with the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CAES) offers a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture and Rural Innovation (BARI-EXT) distance education mode of study. Through the Department of Open and Distance Learning ,CEES is responsible for the administrative and support functions whilst CAES through its Department of Agriculture Extension and Innovation is responsible for the academic functions of the programme.


Promoting Makerere University Knowledge Transfer Partnerships

Centre for Lifelong Learning is a key player in promoting Makerere University Knowledge Transfer Partnerships. Centre for Lifelong Learning’s Cordinator Dr Ngaka has revealed that Centre will play a role in promoting service learning mode of training. Partnerships will be formed between Makerere University and businesses to solve problems identified by either party.

President Kibaki receives honorary Doctorate of Laws as Makerere University officially launches Collegiate System

President Kibaki receives Makerere University on the 24th January 2012, concluded the 62nd graduation with the award of an Honorary Doctorate of Laws to President Mwai Kibaki of Kenya, in recognition of his distinguished and outstanding contribution to public service at the national, regional and international levels - especially in the areas of Academic Excellence, Political, Social and Economic reforms.


Open and Distance Learning staff participate in Australian Leadership Award Fellowship

Two academic staff from the Department of Open and Distance Learning travelled to the University of Sunshine Coast (USC) Australia in July for a five week fellowship to broaden their expertise in policy and curriculum development of e-learning practices. Chair DODL, Dr Paul Muyinda and Mr.Godfrey Mayende joined Dr. Jude Lubega (COCIS) and eight education experts from Uganda in the AusAID-funded leadership program run by USC’s International Projects Group. It has been an amazing and insightful experience to complete this fellowship”, Dr. Muyinda said.


A fond Farewell to Dr James Urwick

The College would like to take this opportunity to  give a warm goodbye to one of our Academic staff. Dr James Urwick is leaving us after 12 months of service. He has been a great addition to the College and East African School for Higher Education Studies and Development where he specialized in policy and planning at school level. He has been the CEES Representative on the Board of Research and Graduate Training. Dr Leah Sikoyo has taken over from him as our representative on this committee. 


Dr. Charles Owenja Yik-Walla

With deep sorrow, we inform you of the death of Dr. Charles Owenja Yik-Walla which occurred on Wednesday 2012-06-20 at Mulago Hospital

The late Dr. Charles Owenja Yik-Walla has been the Acting Head of Department, Adult and Community Education, School of Distance and Lifelong Learning, College of Education and External studies, Makerere University.
