Positively engaging parents and the community in children’s learning

Enrolment for both boys and girls has significantly improved in Uganda since the introduction of UPE in 1997. However high drop out rates, poor learning outcomes and performance levels still exist in the education system more so in rural areas. Nevertheless, the education system has not focused enough attention on the contribution of community based initiatives in improving learning outcomes and there is limited school/community level research in Uganda.

Student leadership workshop

A leadership workshop for student leaders of CEES was held on 13th February in the School of Education Conference Hall. The student leaders viewed a DvD of the Destiny Leadership Expo 2013 Conference after which they discussed the concepts discovered and how these could be applied to practice. The students were taken through good presentation techniques, leadership etiquette and goal setting.

Publishing for new readers

In a bid to support a reading culture and overcome the lack of appropriate reading materials for rural people, 17 titles of short stories for new readers were published in four local languages (Lugwara, Luganda, Luo and English). This was part of the Learning for Empowerment Through Training in Ethnographic Research project funded by the DFID-British Council DELPHE.

Staff Party

On 18th January staff from the College got together at Ndere Centre for the staff party. It was a fantastic night for all who attended. The party was an evening of food, drinks, entertainment and lots of dancing. During the same function, CEES rewarded and recognised the efforts of retiring staff for their dedicated service to Makerere University and to the College.
